Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra Rumors: Bigger Battery, New Cameras, and a Catch
Samsung’s next Ultra could finally move past its 5,000mAh battery ceiling, but the latest leaks suggest the upgrade story is more complicated than it first looked.
The Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra is still months away, but the rumor mill is already producing a surprisingly detailed and slightly contradictory picture of Samsung’s next flagship.
The good news is that Samsung may finally address two complaints Ultra owners have been making for years: battery capacity and camera hardware. The less exciting news is that some of the high end performance upgrades we expected may be getting pushed aside, possibly because of rising component costs.
As always, none of this is official. Samsung has not announced the Galaxy S27 Ultra, and early leaks can change several times before a phone reaches a store shelf.
The battery upgrade I actually want
The Galaxy S26 Ultra still uses a 5,000mAh battery, according to Samsung’s official specifications. That was already beginning to feel conservative when competing Android phones started pushing well beyond that number.
Now, reports suggest the Galaxy S27 Ultra could jump to a 5,700mAh or 5,800mAh cell. The rumor is also tied to silicon carbon battery technology, which can offer higher energy density without requiring a phone to become dramatically thicker. Android Central reported the latest battery leak, while earlier reports pointed to a more modest 5,500mAh capacity.
If Samsung actually reaches 5,800mAh, that would be roughly 16 percent more capacity than the current Ultra. That kind of upgrade would matter every day, not just in a benchmark app or an AI demo.
Of course, battery capacity is not the same thing as battery life. Display brightness, modem efficiency, thermals, software, and the next Snapdragon chip will all matter. Still, this is the rumor I am watching most closely. Samsung has spent years polishing the Ultra experience while leaving the battery at essentially the same starting point.
The camera system may finally get interesting
Samsung has been leaning on a 200MP main camera for several Ultra generations, but the megapixel count has started to matter less than the sensor behind it. The S27 Ultra is rumored to use a newer 200MP sensor with LOFIC technology, potentially paired with a variable aperture lens.
LOFIC is designed to improve dynamic range by helping the sensor retain more information in extremely bright and dark parts of an image. Variable aperture could also let the camera adjust to the scene, using a narrower opening in bright conditions and a wider opening when more light is needed.
That sounds more useful than another jump in megapixels. I would rather see Samsung produce cleaner highlights, more natural HDR, and better low light video than announce a 300MP camera that still relies on aggressive processing.
SamMobile’s camera report connects the rumored 200MP sensor with both LOFIC and variable aperture. It also suggests Samsung may remove the familiar 3x telephoto camera and rely more heavily on the main sensor crop to bridge the gap to a 5x lens.
That part is still very much up in the air. A newer leak reported by SamMobile in July claims the Ultra could have a 50MP ultrawide camera, a 50MP 5x telephoto, and a second telephoto camera.
The camera count and layout are not settled enough to treat any current render or spec list as final.
The broad direction, however, is clear: Samsung appears to be reconsidering the camera system instead of simply carrying every lens forward unchanged.

A camera bar could replace Samsung’s familiar layout
One of the more interesting design leaks shows a horizontal camera bar running across the back of the phone. It looks like a cross between an older Galaxy S10 and a modern Google Pixel.
Tom’s Guide reported on the Ice Universe concept, while also warning that the image may not represent the final phone.
I hope Samsung is at least considering it. The separate camera rings have become part of the Galaxy identity, but they have also made the last few Ultra models feel visually similar. A horizontal bar would give the S27 Ultra a stronger design signature and might create more room for internal changes such as magnetic wireless charging.
The catch is that a dramatic camera redesign does not automatically mean better photos. Samsung needs to improve the sensors and the image processing, not just rearrange the glass on the back.
The performance upgrade may be less exciting

The Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to use a next generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family chip and launch with Android 17 and Samsung’s next major version of One UI. SamMobile’s early rumor roundup points in that direction, although the exact chip branding and regional configuration are still unconfirmed.
What is less predictable is the memory and storage configuration.
Earlier rumors pointed to LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage, two upgrades that could help with demanding games, on device AI, and long term performance. But a newer report says Samsung may leave both technologies out of the S27 Ultra, potentially reserving them for limited edition devices instead. Android Central’s latest report links the change to cost and supply concerns.
Most people will not notice the difference on day one. A new Ultra will still feel fast. But storage and memory standards affect how well a phone ages, especially as AI features and apps become more demanding.
If Samsung removes those upgrades while raising the price, it will be fair to question how Ultra the package really is.
The S Pen probably stays, but do not expect a reinvention
The S Pen is still expected to remain part of the Ultra formula. However, there is no strong indication that Samsung is preparing a major stylus upgrade.
Samsung already removed Bluetooth functionality from the S Pen in recent Ultra models, which eliminated features such as remote camera controls. Android Central previously reported that Samsung had also stepped back from a more ambitious hybrid S Pen design.
That may disappoint Note fans, but I think the more important question is whether Samsung can keep the S Pen without allowing it to limit the rest of the phone.
What about a Galaxy S27 Pro?
Samsung may also expand the lineup with a Galaxy S27 Pro positioned between the Plus and Ultra models. Recent reporting from The Verge describes it as a smaller, high end phone that could borrow some Ultra features while leaving out the built in S Pen.
That could be a smart move for people who want flagship cameras without carrying the largest phone in the lineup. It could also make Samsung’s product line more confusing, especially if the Pro and Ultra share too many features.
Release date and price
Samsung is expected to reveal the Galaxy S27 family in early 2027, likely around January or February. SamMobile expects an early 2027 launch, but Samsung has not announced a date.
The starting price is not known, and rumored memory and component pressures could make a price increase more likely.

The Galaxy S27 Ultra could be genuinely compelling if Samsung delivers three things: a battery closer to 5,800mAh, a new main camera sensor that improves real world image quality, and a more efficient next generation chip.
But the current rumors also point to a phone built around compromises. The 3x telephoto may disappear. LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 may be delayed. The S Pen may receive no meaningful upgrade.
My read right now is that the S27 Ultra is more interesting than a routine yearly refresh, but it is not automatically a generational leap.
Samsung finally appears to be looking at the areas owners actually complain about. Now it has to make sure the fixes are real and not just a new camera bar, a longer list of AI features, and another phone that still needs more battery by dinner.
Bottom line: If you already own an S25 Ultra or S26 Ultra, there is no reason to rush based on rumors. If Samsung confirms the larger battery and new camera hardware, the S27 Ultra may be worth a serious look when it launches.
